When selecting a rotary hammer for concrete drilling, professionals often face a trade-off between portability and power. Compact models are lighter and easier to handle but lack the force needed for demanding tasks, while larger hammers deliver more impact energy but can be cumbersome, especially in overhead applications. Hilti’s new TE 8-22 rotary hammer aims to bridge this gap, offering a balance of performance and ergonomics designed for repetitive drilling in concrete and reinforced concrete.

A New Addition to the Cordless Lineup

Developed as an expansion of its cordless SDS Plus rotary hammer range, the TE 8-22 is not a replacement for the existing TE 6-22 model. Instead, it targets a specific niche: tasks requiring more power than compact drills can provide while remaining manageable for overhead work. The tool is optimized for drilling in the 5/8-inch diameter range, delivering 2.4 foot-pounds of impact energy, which surpasses the TE 4-22’s 1.7 ft-lbs and TE 6-22’s 1.9 ft-lbs.

While the TE 30-22 offers more power, the TE 8-22 serves as a versatile option for tasks like formwork drilling and wedge anchor installation, eliminating the need to switch tools mid-job.

Reducing Operator Fatigue

Repetitive drilling in concrete can strain the hands and arms, particularly when working overhead. To address this, it incorporated its 3D Active Vibration Reduction (AVR) system into the TE 8-22. Unlike traditional AVR systems that dampen vibration in one or two axes, this design uses a floating sub-chassis that allows the motor assembly to move independently of the tool’s housing. The result is reduced vibration transfer to the operator’s hands and arms, improving comfort during extended use.

David Walker, a member of Hilti’s product management team, noted that customers often praise the tool’s smoothness before highlighting its power. For professionals drilling dozens of holes daily, this reduction in vibration can enhance productivity and reduce fatigue-related strain.

Combating Bit Binding

When a drill bit encounters rebar in reinforced concrete, it can bind suddenly, twisting the rotary hammer violently. The TE 8-22 addresses this with Active Torque Control (ATC), which detects severe binds and halts rotation within approximately a quarter turn. This minimizes rotational force on the operator, potentially lowering the risk of wrist, arm, and shoulder injuries.

Hilti recommends pairing the TE 8-22 with its B 22-195 Nuron battery for optimal runtime and drilling performance. The combination is designed to handle demanding jobs without adding excessive weight, while compatibility with other Nuron platform batteries offers flexibility for users with existing equipment.

Dust Management Solutions

It addresses airborne concrete dust concerns with the TE DRS-22 onboard dust removal attachment designed specifically for the TE 8-22 system. The attachment collects dust directly at the hole, preventing particles from becoming airborne during drilling operations. This targeted collection approach reduces respirable crystalline silica exposure for workers performing repetitive drilling tasks. The TE 8-22 is designed to make repetitive drilling easier while also reducing vibration, managing unexpected binding, and even controlling dust, making it a versatile option for professionals in the field.
