Stihl Launches First Battery-Powered Snow Thrower SFA 120
Stihl’s first battery-powered snow thrower, the SFA 120, launched at Equip Expo 2026, offering year-round use with AP battery system.

At Equip Expo 2026, Stihl announced 90 new products to mark its 100th anniversary. One stands out: the SFA 120 battery-powered snow thrower. It’s the company’s first entry into this category, expanding its AP battery system for year-round use. This launch shows Stihl’s commitment to diversifying its product range while maintaining its reputation for quality and innovation.
Stihl SFA 120: Key Features
The SFA 120 is a single-stage snow thrower with features typical of its class, backed by Stihl’s build quality. Highlights include:
- Rubber Auger Paddle: Clears snow without damaging surfaces like asphalt or concrete, ensuring longevity and versatility for various outdoor environments.
- One-Hand Chute Adjustments: Allows users to change the chute direction or throw angle with one hand, enhancing ease of use and efficiency during operation.
- Dual Battery Ports: Automatically switches between two batteries for extended runtime, providing uninterrupted performance during longer snow-clearing sessions.
- Multi-Position Handle: Adjustable height for comfort, folds for compact storage, catering to users of different heights and storage needs.
- LED Lights: Illuminates the work area in low-light conditions, ensuring safety and visibility during early morning or evening use.
- Replaceable Skid Shoes: Protects the housing from scratches and impacts, reducing maintenance costs and extending the life of the machine.
Performance and Specifications
According to Stihl, the SFA 120 can clear a 6- to 10-car driveway with 6 inches of fresh snow using the AP 300.0P battery. However, some sources report conflicting runtime estimates, which Stihl has yet to clarify. This discrepancy highlights the need for further testing and user feedback to validate real-world performance.

The thrower has a 22-inch clearing width and a 13-inch maximum clearing depth, with a 30-foot throw distance. While these specs are competitive, they don’t stand out compared to similar models from brands like EGO and Milwaukee. For instance, the EGO 2120 and Milwaukee 3036 offer slightly narrower clearing widths of 21 inches but differ in maximum clearing depths and throw distances. The EGO model matches the SFA 120’s 13-inch depth, while the Milwaukee model has a 12-inch depth. In terms of throw distance, the EGO boasts a 42-foot throw, and the Milwaukee reaches 35 feet, both surpassing the SFA 120 in this aspect.
The Cold-Weather Battery Advantage
What sets the SFA 120 apart is its compatibility with the new AP 300.0 P battery. Designed for cold weather, it operates in temperatures as low as -4°F, addressing a common issue with lithium batteries that lose performance in the cold. This cold-start function is a significant advantage for users in regions with harsh winters, ensuring reliable operation even in extreme conditions.
This battery also offers 60% higher peak power and 20% longer runtime than the AP 300.0 S. With the AL 1602 MO charger, it reaches 80% charge in just 10 minutes. These enhancements make the AP 300.0 P a versatile power source, not only for the SFA 120 but also for other Stihl tools, such as chainsaws, which can be key during winter storm cleanup.

Unlike traditional DIY brands reaching for professional performance, Stihl positions the SFA 120 as a premium solution for demanding homeowners and light professional users. Its single-stage design limits it to snowfalls under 13 inches, making it less suitable for areas with heavier accumulation. However, for users with moderate snowfall, it offers a balance of power, convenience, and durability.
The SFA 120 is available as a kit with the AP 300.0 P battery and AL 301 charger for $899.99 or as a bare tool for $699.99. This pricing positions it competitively within the premium segment, offering value for users already invested in the Stihl AP battery ecosystem or those seeking a reliable, high-performance snow thrower.
