Flex 24V Brushless Hammer Drill Review

Flex has updated its 24V Brushless Hammer Drill for a second generation, and the new FX1272 model brings noticeable gains in speed and torque. The tool aims to compete with established brands by delivering higher performance numbers and a solid feature set, including a selectable Turbo mode.

Speed and Torque Improvements

The 2021 FX1271 model introduced a line of 24V tools that challenged market leaders. The second-generation FX1272 continues that push. Flex reports the brushless motor delivers 550 RPM in low gear and a maximum of 3,000 RPM when Turbo mode is engaged. The tool produces 1,500 in-lbs of torque, which ranks it second only to the Makita GPH03 in that category.

The hammer rate also sees a jump. With Turbo mode active, the max hammer rate hits 48,000 beats per minute. That figure is 8,000 BPM higher than the previous model. The tool operates in standard modes at 2,300 RPM and 36,800 BPM, respectively.

Real-World Testing Results

Hands-on testing involved driving three 8-inch GRK RSS screws into a glued OSB block. The drill drove these screws in 1.72 seconds, a 23% improvement over the first generation. Drilling three 1-inch spade holes through 4 inches of OSB took 1.85 seconds, a 24% gain. Concrete testing with a 3/8-inch masonry bit showed a 25% faster time of 4.24 seconds. Driving a 2 9/16-inch self-feed bit through a 2×4 section took 1.37 seconds, a 26% improvement.

These results indicate the second generation outperforms the original across various drilling and driving tasks. The form factor remains consistent, making the upgrade feel familiar to existing users.

Comparing the raw numbers to other top-tier options, Flex’s offering holds its own. The increased speed and torque allow the tool to maintain high RPMs under load, which is critical when driving large fasteners or drilling through dense materials.

Despite the high power output, Flex managed to keep the drill compact. The tool measures 6.9 inches from front to back. It weighs 3.6 pounds bare, but the kit includes two 5.0Ah batteries, bringing the total weight to 5.8 pounds. While this is on the heavier side for a compact drill, the build uses metal components rather than plastic, giving it a premium feel.
