TOP FIVE WEDNESDAY: Top five unlikeable protagonists

Top Five Wednesday header

(Top Five Wednesday was created by GingerReadsLainey. Find out more at the Goodreads group!)

Continuing with my rebellious attitude, I’ve decided to do the opposite of this week’s topic. We’re supposed to be talking about the unlikeable protagonists that we secretly like and supported. However, because I’m a seething mass of rage, I’m choosing five protagonists who I absolutely HATED. These five can burn in firey hell, I hate them that much.

5) Ollie from ‘The Deathday Letter’ by Shaun David Hutchinson

The Deathday Letter by Shaun David Hutchinson

I didn’t actually finish ‘The Deathday Letter’. I know, I don’t often DNF books, but I was flicking through when it was a free featured read on Riveted, got twenty pages in and hated everything about the protagonist. All he does is over-sexualise women and masturbate, and it’s such a stereotypical representation of a teenage boy.

4) Darren from ‘Me Being Me Is Exactly as Insane as You Being You’ by Todd Hasak-Lowy

Darren writes lists. They’re lists about everything, but nearly all of them include ENDLESS COMPLAINING. This boy is EXHAUSTING. His dad comes out, and he’s majorly homophobic about him and refuses to talk to him. He also uses another girl when his crush isn’t interested in him (douchebag move) and, did I already mention, he just keeps writing lists?! Most of them aren’t even related to the story. Yawn.

3) Luke Skywalker

Luke Skywalker

All this boy does is WHINE. It’s so irritating! I finally watched the first two Star Wars films a couple of months ago, and while I really enjoyed some of them, I absolutely HATE Luke. He has no redeeming qualities, and he’s one of the most unlikeable protagonists I’ve ever come across. I don’t understand how he’s so popular.

2) River from ‘The Graces’ by Laure Eve

The Graces by Laure Eve

I HATED ‘The Graces’, but I thought River was particularly bad. She chooses her own name, manipulates her friends, lies… All pretty negative points. Add to that the fact that she’s “not like other girls”… Yeah, River’s a piece of shit.

1) Derrick from ‘Panther’ by David Owen Panther by David Owen

Derrick is the worst of all. He puts the unlikeable into unlikeable protagonists. I went into detail about exactly why Derrick’s despicable in my review, but it’s nice to remind people once in a while.

That’s it for this week’s Top Five Wednesday! Do you hate any of these characters, or are there other characters you hate even more?

  • Barb(Boxermommyreads)

I don’t care much for Luke Skywalker either and would prefer spending time with Darth Vader over being forced to interact with Luke. I don’t know how he’s managed to survive so long.

    • He’s the worst! My friends keep telling me I’m going to start liking him more, but I don’t see it happening.
