TOP TEN TUESDAY: Ten books I meant to read in 2016 (but haven’t yet!)

A Game of Thrones by George RR Martin

(Top Ten Tuesday was created by The Broke and The Bookish!)

With the amount of books being released each year and all of the books I’ve already got piled up ready to read from years past, I never get around to picking up everything I want to.
It meant I actually missed out on reading some of my most anticipated releases last year, but I’m hoping to rectify that problem and read them pretty soon in 2017. I missed much more than just ten, but these are the ones I’m really kicking myself over.

10) ‘Game of Thrones’ by George R. R. Martin

Every year I say I’m going to start the Game of Thrones series, and every year I neglect to do so.

9) ‘The Girls’ by Emma Cline

‘The Girls’ was one of the buzziest debut novels around in 2016, but I didn’t get a chance to read it because the request list at the library was so damn long. I’ve managed to borrow it now, and this is a priority read.

8) ‘The Bronze Key’ by Holly Black and Cassandra Clare

I quite enjoyed the first two books in the Magisterium series, so I don’t know why I’m faffing around and delaying picking this one up. It’s so short that I know I’ll be able to read it in one sitting!

7) ‘The Winner’s Kiss’ by Marie Rutkoski

I absolutely adored the first two books in Marie Rutkoski’s trilogy, but it’s been so long since I read them that I wanted to reread them before picking up the third and final book in the series. I haven’t had time to do that yet, but I’m going to try to in 2017.

6) ‘Songs About a Girl’ by Chris Russell

Being both a book and music blogger, this book looked like it was going to be right up my alley. I heard so many amazing things about Chris Russell’s debut novel, and I’m hoping to pick this one up soon – I’ve been reading quite a lot of heavy books recently, and this looks like it’ll be a bit more fun.

5) ‘Passenger’ by Alexandra Bracken

With ‘Wayfarer’ being released last week, I’d hope to read the first book in Alexandra’s new series before the sequel was released… Now I don’t know when I’m going to have time to catch up.

4) ‘Frost Like Night’ by Sara Raasch

I might have read this one if I’d actually read the second novel in the trilogy, ‘Ice Like Fire’… But I have it out of the library, so I’m well on my way to finally catching up on this series. I think ‘Snow Like Ashes’ was one of my favourite series openers EVER, and I hope the rest of the series stays as strong.

3) ‘No Virgin’ by Anne Cassidy

Sounding kind of like Louise O’Neill’s ‘Asking For It’, ‘No Virgin’ was @thebookclubs read for November, but when I realised I was going to be away on the chat date, I neglected to read it. I’m still regretting this, because it sounds like a book that I’m going to love, even if it will emotionally destroy me.

2) ‘Holding Up The Universe’ by Jennifer Niven

I didn’t read ‘All The Bright Places’, because I was too scared that it was going to emotionally destroy me. I was determined to read Jennifer’s second novel, but it came out at a time where I was already overwhelmed with catching up on my reading, and somehow this one slipped through the net. I will pick both of them up in 2017, though.

1) ‘The Sun Is Also A Star’ by Nicola Yoon

I almost cried when my NetGalley request for this novel was accepted. I was SO excited, because I absolutely loved ‘Everything Everything’, but after hearing that it had about twenty thousand different perspectives and a huge dollop of instalove, I was put off. I’m still avoiding it now, but I’m going to try to get over my fear and just give it a chance.

I hope you enjoyed this Top Ten Tuesday! Have you read any of the books I’ve mentioned, and if so would you recommend them? Which books did you neglect to read that you want to pick up as soon as possible?

  • The Winner's Kiss was great. And I love the Game of Thrones series. Those books can be slow going, but they're pretty epic. Hope you get around to some of these soon. Have a great week!

    • I'm always so nervous about series enders, so I'm glad you've told me that! I absolutely LOVE the GoT TV show, so I'm certain I'm going to like the books even more, I just think I'm going to struggle to keep track of all of the characters.

  • Passenger is on my list as well. But there are other books on here that I want to read too! I want to read Frost Like Night, and The Winner's Kiss, but I still have to read the second book in those two trilogies first.

    • I'm glad it's not just me that hasn't caught up! I always feel like I'm the only person who starts series and doesn't finish them, so I'm glad to find someone else who shares that habit.

  • I have passenger, I need to read it too.
So many books last year and so little time! Also in my case I was not in the mood of reading a lot, I am getting older and I get too tired that when I sit to read I fall sleep 😛

    • I've been reading more than ever before, but it just means that my brain is a blender – I keep getting characters and plot lines confused! This year I'm hoping to read less and remember more.

  • I read No Virgin last year, it's a quick little read, not the best book I've read, but not bad.

    • The fact that it's so short definitely makes it appeal to me. I should be able to read it in one sitting, so I don't know why I keep putting it off!

  • The Sun is Also a Star was awesome! So was Holding up the Universe! Great list!

    • Damn, I really need to get a move on and actually pick them up. Why am I so bad at reading the books I'm really excited about?!

  • Well I just added at least 3 books to my TBR from your list! Thanks for sharing!

    • Always happy to introduce people to new books – I hope you enjoy them!

  • Me

Hi! I'm intrigued by Songs About a Girl. The Sun is Also a Star is still on my TBR list. 🙂

    • Wow, we're two of the only people in the WORLD who haven't read it yet! 😛
